In March 1969, they introduced the Caliber 11 “Chrono-Matic,” featuring a decentralized micro-rotor for winding. It marked a historic moment in watchmaking, alongside Zenith’s EL-Primero movement.

The 1809 was also equipped with the smooth aluminum bezel, introduced with the 0818 Chronomat just before, which has proven its durability in this watch for over 40 years. Overall, a 48mm watch in 1970 was an absolute sensation. Even today, 48mm is larger than average and makes a bold statement on the wrist.

At that time, the watch was available in manual and automatic versions. The case was identical for both versions, featuring openings on both sides for the tube or crown. In the automatic variant, the crown is on the left, while in the manual version, it’s on the right. The unused opening was covered with a black plastic cap.
